The “Altadena Suite” was commissioned by the Los Angeles Jazz Society in 2013 to recognize and honor the legendary drummer, Albert “Tootie” Heath. With generosity from the Aaron Copland Recording Fund, this work was recorded in 2015. In September 2016, Ropeadope Records released “Altadena” by the Richard Sears Sextet ft. Albert “Tootie” Heath.

“With Altadena, Sears penned a constantly engaging work that brims with imagination and various influences … leading [Tootie] into territories that one would not immediately associate with him.”

Alain Drouot, DownBeat

“The suite is vividly expressed through a top-flight sextet in splendid performances that are clearly inspired by Heath’s rich legacy but also Sears’s dynamic vision … [Altadena] is one of 2016’s best releases”

Mark F. Turner, All About Jazz

“This album is full of zig-zagging, free-flowing invention over five movements and a taut 35 minutes. The Philadelphia-born Heath is an underappreciated gem having played with John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and Dexter Gordon (to name a few), and his rich musical track record only gains further esteem with intricate compositions by Sears.”
