Angel City Jazz Festival & Los Angeles Jazz Society Commission

Angel City Poster

In fulfillment of a commission from the Los Angeles Jazz Society, I’ve composed a suite for sextet to honor and feature jazz drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath; one of the last living drummers to have played with John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Lester Young, Don Cherry, and many others. With this piece I hope present a less-often heard side of Tootie’s playing to honor and continue the legacy of his work.

The premiere performance will be held at the John Ford Amphitheater on October 6th as part of the Angel City Jazz Festival

Richard Sears Trio Vol. 1 Release

“These original compositions were developed over five years, drawing on impressions from time in Northern California, Los Angeles, and New York. In August 2012, we retreated to the peace and isolation of the Santa Cruz Mountains to record this album over a three day period. The sound of the recording, as well as the mood of our performance, were shaped by the large room where the recording took place, a vaulted redwood interior overlooking treetops and an expansive canyon. It is our pleasure to share this music with you and we hope it brings the same enjoyment that went into its creation.”
